Visiting Dubrovnik, the city of many stairs

Old Town Dubrovnik, most famous for it being the set of Kings Landing in the very famous show Games of Thrones, was definitely beautiful and tourist central. Every nationality was in the city that you could imagine. This is not a complaint because I myself am a tourist. However, if you want to experience Dubrovnik without so many tourists, I would stay away from the Main Street and the gorgeous Adriatic water because that is where ALL the tourists congregated. Unfortunately, that is also where most spoke some form of English but I made do. A hike around the city seemed like the best plan.

But before my hike, I stumbled upon a lovely little market in one of the squares. I scored some homemade soap made with local lavender, spices, and other goodies. The soap was not only a great souvenir to take home, it was also a necessity since I somehow forgot my own when packing. I also scored a gorgeous canvas to hang up my home.

Off on my hike of the many stairs of Dubrovnik, I had a delicious meal at a lovely little restaurant that I stumbled upon. Cafe Azur, a Thai-Croatian fusion restaurant that sounds like it may be the weirdest combination, was SO good. Chicken and chorizo tacos with jalapeño mayonnaise and green onions was the best meal decision that I had so far on my trip. It was so fresh and full of so much flavor. And the coffee I had with my meal was some of the best coffee I have ever had- even better than Italy!

One of the things I have found that is a bit hard to navigate is the amount of seafood that is offered. I want to eat the local food but so much is fish or some other form that I don’t like nor will I try (octopus soup? Hard pass for me). I do not like any seafood and I am not an adventurous eater at all!

The rest of my afternoon was spent at the waterfront bay of the city. I face timed with my sweet nephews and niece while catching some sun to warm me up because walking between the tall buildings when the sun moved from overhead was a bit chilly. Again, this is the most touristy section of the city but I was determined to go on a boat ride cruise which I was surprised was relatively inexpensive!

I sat in the back of the glass bottom boat next to a lovely Irish couple and we chatted about anything and everything. One of the things I find hilarious is that once someone found out I was American, they immediately ask me my opinion about Donald Trump. Pretty much happened 4 out of 5 times. Aside from the small chat about politics, the tour was lovely. Croatia is such a stunning country and the water of the Adriatic is so blue and clear, especially near the shore. I only wish it was a little warmer or I would have taken a dip!

As the sun starting inching close to the horizon, I took the lazy route back to my apartment via taxi. My poor feet or calves could not handle the millions of stairs back. Spending the evening wrapped up in a blanket while just enjoying the view from the balcony of my apartment and watching the sunset fall over the Old Town Dubrovnik, the city of stairs, was the perfect ending to a wonderful day.
