In an effort to keep my life whimsical, I decided that I was on the hunt for some heirloom tomatoes for a delicious tomato sandwich. For some reason, despite my research (Facebooking the Boomers), no one in my local area had any. I checked two local farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and home growers.
Not to be put off, I took my search outside of the state on a recent beach trip. I should have known my beloved Trader Joe’s would not let me down.
With the treasure in hand, I got back and knew I had to make the ultimate Southern Girl Dinner™️.
And I am going to share this delicacy, which is just 4 ingredients (3 honestly, but there is no consensus on whether Salt & Pepper are considered an ingredient. But I digress.)

Ingredients for a Southern Tomato Sandwich
- White bread of your choice
- Tomatoes cut 1/4 inch thick
- Mayo
- Salt and Pepper
That’s it. That’s the sandwich.
Some folks toast their bread, some use fancy sourdough bread, some swear by Duke’s mayonnaise, and some add other seasonings. I am not going to fuss and say there is a wrong or right way because this is more contentious than talking about someone’s mama.
Make the sandwich however you want. All I can say is I personally like my bread soft and not toasted, my mayo spread thin all the way to the edge, and my salt extra flaky.
