If you know me, you know I am ALWAYS on the lookout for a good mural (or 10) when I research a new city. It’s literally one of the first things I look at when I begin my google/Instagram search. I am such a huge fan of all public art because I believe it shows the heart of the cities I visit – the native talent! The capital Tallahassee, Florida did not disappoint one bit! What started out as a hunt for a few specific ones that I found via my researched turned into a treasure trove of color and styles that I literally stumbled upon (or more like drove past and banged a U’eyd!)
I am sure if you go to this college town capital, you will find even more just by driving around other areas especially near the college. The area had so much vibrancy and I wish I had explored more but I had an itinerary in mind and my nephew and niece traveling that were on nap schedule! I was so impressed with the ones I found because they varied in style, color, and themes. And did I mention COLOR? It was a rainbow explosion which MAKES a mural in my opinion. And makes an even better Instagram post, too if we are going to be honest with each other. But without further ado, check out my suggestions on where to find the best Tallahassee street art WITH addresses!
Rail Square Art Park
602 McDonnell Dr, Tallahassee, FL 32310
We visited this little area because of the Arti Gras parade and it was so fun to just walk around the circle and visit all of the artisan shops. It is definitely a creative haven for all kinds of artists! There was something for everyone: art galleries, a crystal shop, a barber shop, a boutique where I got the cutest sunnies, and even homemade soaps and scrubs! There is even a little cafe in a caboose. Plus there were hidden little street art throughout the place. They almost always have an event going on so be sure to check out their website and schedule of events!
World Peace Mural
915 Railroad Ave., Tallahassee, FL, 32310
World Peace Mural artist Renda Writer says, “Words are the art. The art is the words”
Did you know there is a World Peace Mural tour?? This mural is part of a larger collection of “World Peace” murals throughout many states! What started as one mural in Miami has become a movement of over 50+ murals with even a few in Haiti and Mexico! His motivation is to write “World Peace” all over the place and inject it into the conversation. He is so passionate about his project that he wants to continue to write “World Peace” everywhere he can until he cannot physically do it anymore. I definitely am glad I am only a little cog in the larger picture of sharing his life’s work!
To Coexist
825 Railroad Ave, Tallahassee, FL, 32310
“We are all different and come from different backgrounds but we all live together and rise together.”
A monkey astronaught, a goldfish, and a colorful cactus sound like the punchline of a crazy joke. But nope, it’s just a mural located on the side of Merv’s Melt Shop. This colorful street art aims to be an example of some important themes: tolerance, respect, and kindness to name a few.
Click here to watch a time lapse of the mural being painted!
GVO bar – “Good Vibes Only”
809 Railroad Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32310
Located literally across the parking lot of Merv’s is a boatload of even more colorful murals. There is even a purple one with Jimi Hendrix and a gold tooth! Why do I love the name of this bar so much? Perhaps its my millennial basic heart? But what I love more about this place is that it is literally covered on all 20 feet tall sides with murals. What I didn’t know on my visit is that on the other side of the building there is an art garden! I am sooo bummed I missed this but learn from my mistake: go laze around in hammocks among some palm trees, play a few yard games, and get your drink on with friends all while experiencing the funky murals!
These are just some of the murals I visited but Tallahassee has a TON more of murals and public art that you can visit! Tallahassee Arts has a nifty Public Art Guide that you should check out if you want to see even more! Each one has a picture and a location/address on where it is located. I wish all cities created guides like this because it would make my research much easier before my visits! But alas, they do not so that is why I am here. I want to pick the very best of the best and share with you!
If you love my Tallahassee mural post,
